Senior mathematics and computer science major Zineng Tang was named a recipient of the 2023 Computing Research Association (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award. Tang was one of only four winners from colleges and universities across North America.
Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most honored college honorary society, inducted 260 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students as new members. Less than 1% of all college students qualify for acceptance.
The New York Times published an obituary for Department Founder Frederick P. Brooks, Jr. “The impact of his work in computer graphics was enormous,” said Patrick Hanrahan, a professor at Stanford University and a fellow Turing Award winner. “Fred Brooks was a thought leader way ahead of his time.”
The Department of Computer Science mourns the loss of its founder, Dr. Frederick P. Brooks, Jr., a pioneer in the field of computer science and a tremendous colleague and friend to so many. Dr. Brooks passed away on November 17, 2022 at the age of 91, surrounded by his family.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity is pleased to announce the availability of postdoctoral research appointments for a period of two years. The purpose of the Program is to develop scholars from underrepresented groups for possible tenure track appointments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other research universities.
Assistant professors Snigdha Chaturvedi and Shashank Srivastava were both among 51 award recipients for the fall 2021 and winter 2022 Amazon Research Awards, which featured awardees from 37 universities in eight countries.

UNC Computer Science, in partnership with Intel, hosted its first Research Experience for Undergraduate Students (REU) from June – July 2022. Led by the efforts of Associate Professor Cynthia Sturton, the REU provided opportunities for three undergraduate students to explore research in computer science and gain industry mentorship.
The fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year is the first in a new chapter for the UNC Department of Computer Science. William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor Samarjit Chakraborty was appointed department chair on July 1.
New faculty members Benjamin Berg, Sayeed Ghani, and Roni Sengupta bring experience in both research and teaching and contribute to the department’s mission of maintaining academic excellence in an inclusive environment.
