Two UNC Computer Science faculty members were recognized with Amazon Research Awards in an announcement by Amazon Science on October 10, 2022. Assistant professors Snigdha Chaturvedi and Shashank Srivastava were both among the 51 award recipients for the fall 2021 and winter 2022 cycles, which featured awardees from 37 universities in eight countries.
Amazon Research Awards provide academic researchers with unrestricted funds and AWS Promotional Credits, which include access to datasets, services, and tools. Funded research results are typically released under open-source licenses.
Chaturvedi’s research proposal, “Task-agnostic Learning of Fair Text Representations and their Application in Natural Language Generation,” was funded under Amazon’s winter 2022 cycle, which was related to fairness in AI.
Srivastava’s proposal, “Learning from Natural Language Explanations for the Long Tail,” was funded under Amazon’s fall 2021, AWS AI. Shashank was one of nine recipients in natural language processing for the funding cycle.
