Bertasius Awarded Sony Faculty Innovation Award

Assistant Professor Gedas Bertasius has been conferred a 2021 Sony Faculty Innovation Award in Information Technology. With this award, Bertasius will fund a project aimed at leveraging multimodal information to improve video representation learning. 

Chakraborty elected to IEEE Fellows Class of 2022

William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor Samarjit Chakraborty was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for 2022. Chakraborty was recognized for contributions to system-level timing analysis of cyber-physical systems.

Zhang awarded 2021-2022 Bloomberg Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship

Doctoral student Shiyue Zhang was awarded a 2021-2022 Bloomberg Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship in natural language processing. The fellowship covers up to three years of tuition and fees, plus a stipend to be used for living expenses and attending professional conferences.

Chakraborty earns 2021 ACM TECS Best Paper Award

Professor Samarjit Chakraborty was awarded the ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems (TECS) 2021 Best Paper Award for his paper, “Energy Modeling for the Bluetooth Low Energy Protocol,” which appeared in the journal in 2020. The paper was selected from all those that appeared in the journal between 2019 and 2020, and the award was presented in a virtual ceremony at the 2021 Embedded Systems Week.

At long last, UNC CS celebrates Class of 2020 in Chapel Hill

Seventeen months after taking their final exams as Tar Heels, the Class of 2020 was welcomed back to Chapel Hill for a long-awaited send-off. The Department of Computer Science honored its graduates with two events over the weekend: a Class of 2020 celebration and a hybrid-format doctoral hooding ceremony.

Fried Awarded Prestigious NIH Fellowship

Doctoral student Inbar Fried was awarded the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual Predoctoral (F30) Fellowship, which seeks to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students who intend careers as physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists.
