How VC-backed Startups are Using Machine LearningIn this talk, Sunil Nagaraj (UNC Computer Science BS ’04) will explore the latest applications of machine learning in venture capital-backed startups. Sunil Nagaraj runs Ubiquity Ventures as a $200 million seed-stage venture capital firm that backs entrepreneurs leveraging machine learning and smart hardware to allow software to move beyond the screen of computers and phones and into the real physical world. Sunil will use examples from the Ubiquity Ventures portfolio of over 30 startups to highlight their use of machine learning, computer vision, natural language, and beyond. For the budding entrepreneurs, Sunil also will lay out in detail exactly what day 0 to day 365 of founding a brand new startup looks like based on his past experience as a startup founder and current experience backing seed-stage startups. Sunil Nagaraj is the Founder and Managing Partner of Ubiquity Ventures, a seed-stage institutional venture capital firm with almost $200 million under management and a focus on “software beyond the screen”® startups. This includes B2B technology companies that utilize smart hardware or machine learning to solve business problems outside the reach of computers and smartphones. Prior to founding Ubiquity Ventures, Sunil spent the better part of a decade with Bessemer Venture Partners where his work included leading the seed rounds of Auth0 (acquired by Okta for $6.5 billion) and Zapier as well as investments in Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB), and Twitch (acquired by Amazon for $1 billion). Sunil holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Harvard Business School California Research Center and as an Alumni Advisor to the Harvard MS/MBA program. He spends his free time playing piano, sailing, and nerding out on new technologies.
