Hackathons & Events

Carolina Data Challenge

September 25 – October 2, 2021

UNC’s data science-oriented hackathon hosts participants who have the opportunity to hack on different datasets from multiple sectors. At the end of the event, sponsors present awards based on various tracks. With the success of the 2020 event (a 60% increase with 400+ student participants), the 2021 event will be a combination of an in-person symposium (Sept. 25) and a week-long virtual hackathon.

HackNC

October 29 – 31, 2021

HackNC is UNC’s largest hackathon, attracting nearly 700 students from North Carolina and beyond. Participants have access to hands-on workshops and demos from sponsors, as well as talks covering the latest tech trends.

November 2021

One of the first hackathons in the nation designed by LGBTQ+ students for LGBTQ+ students. The goal of the hackathon is to empower LGBTQ+ students to succeed in the tech industry and create the next wave of groundbreaking technology.

Pearl Hacks

February 2022

Established in 2014, Pearl Hacks is one of the nation’s most renowned women and non-binary focused hackathons. The event continues its tradition of creating an encouraging environment for all skill levels to pursue their interests in technology. In 2021, Pearl Hacks hosted 583 student participants, growing 67% from 2020.

HackReality

March 2022

HackReality is the first-ever student-led XR(AR+VR)-themed hackathon in the triangle area. The event brings college students to express their creativity and define their own realities.

AfroPix

April 2022

Hosted by the CS student organization Black in Technology, AfroPix is a day-long event to celebrate Black coders. The event consists of a case competition and a variety of technical workshops/seminars.

Student Engagement

UNC CS Tech Career Fair

Fall & Spring, Virtual on Brazen

Host students in a virtual, targeted career fair environment. Students will be invited to visit company virtual “booths” that will offer both chat and live video options. Booths can be customized and filtered by job postings and job requirements. Companies can staff booths with as many representatives as they need.

TechKNOW

Fall & Spring, Hybrid Virtual & In-Person

TechKNOW is a series of small-group info sessions that allows students to learn about companies and network with company representatives, including recruiters, interns, and alumni. Students are placed in groups and rotated on a set schedule. TechKnow will occur prior to the UNC CS Tech Career Fair to help students prioritize the companies they would like to meet for a one-on-one session.

UNC CS Club Sponsored Tech Talks

The UNC CS Tech Talk Series offers students a chance to hear from partner companies on a variety of skills-based topics. Tech Talks will be hosted by UNC CS clubs who will be matched together after our custom speed-networking event (to be held August 23, 2021).

Analog AMs

Fall & Spring, In-Person (UNC CS will create custom plans for employers with virtual-only recruiting plans)

UNC CS will offer sponsored tabling events outside Brooks Building to engage with students as they come to and from class. Events will be supported with on-site UNC CS staff, pre-event promotion, and signage. Employers will be responsible for bringing materials and catering.

Professional Development

Resume Reboot

Fall & Spring, Virtual

Interact 1-on-1 with students and provide feedback on their resumes to prepare for the 2021/22 recruiting season.

Interface / Mock Technical Interview Event

Fall & Spring, Virtual

Engage with students at this whiteboarding/networking event where you will work 1-on-1 with students to solve sample technical problems used during the interview process.

Tech Career Bootcamp

Fall, Virtual

A series of four professional development workshops with topics coordinated by UNC CS and led by sponsored partners. UNC CS Development Lead will coordinate sponsors by topics ranging from personal branding, acing the behavioral interview, technical interview overview, and negotiating the offer/finding the right company match.

Company Career Treks

Spring, Hybrid Virtual & In-Person

Encourage students to engage in career exploration and professional development by learning more about your company through an immersive combination of career trek.

UNC CS Capstone Project

Fall & Spring, Hybrid Virtual & In-Person

Provide a software project specific to your company’s mission/goals for CS students to complete over the course of a semester as part of COMP 523, Software Engineering. Participation includes virtual project pitch, mentorship opportunities, and a dedicated project team.
