Chakraborty earns 2021 ACM TECS Best Paper Award

Professor Samarjit Chakraborty was awarded the ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems (TECS) 2021 Best Paper Award for his paper, “Energy Modeling for the Bluetooth Low Energy Protocol,” which appeared in the journal in 2020. The paper was selected from all those that appeared in the journal between 2019 and 2020, and the award was presented in a virtual ceremony at the 2021 Embedded Systems Week.

Hase receives 2021 Google PhD Fellowship in NLP

Doctoral student Peter Hase was awarded a 2021 Google PhD Fellowship in natural language processing. The fellowship covers up to three years of tuition and fees, plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel, and personal equipment.

Doctoral alumna Bashima Islam, 28, is engineering the next generation of internet of things devices to operate without batteries. She is developing intermittently powered devices using solar energy and radio frequency, as well as an acoustic sensing wearable to warn pedestrians of the danger of approaching cars.

The Sanctity of Cherokee [Bansal and Zhang work to help revitalize the Cherokee language]

As a result of systemic oppression, there are fewer than 200 native Cherokee speakers in North Carolina. To keep the language alive and pass it to the next generation, UNC-Chapel Hill researcher and Eastern Band Cherokeean citizen Benjamin Frey has teamed up with computer scientists Mohit Bansal and Shiyue Zhang to create a new translation model and grow the literary library of works available in Cherokee.
