UNC CS is excited to welcome the 2023 cohort of the UNC-Intel REU Program, which is designed to foster the next generation of computer science researchers through valuable hands-on experience, industry connections, and a deep understanding of the exciting possibilities within academic research.
More than 2,500 family members, friends, and loved ones gathered at Carmichael Arena to celebrate computer science graduates from winter 2022, spring 2023, and summer 2023. With 510 total graduates across all degree programs, the 2023 commencement marked the largest in the department’s history.
The Department of Computer Science held a professional memorial service for Department Founder Frederick P. Brooks, Jr. on March 4, 2023. Brooks was remembered in panel discussions featuring colleagues from throughout his long career in the computing industry and academia.
The Department of Computer Science mourns the loss of its founder, Dr. Frederick P. Brooks, Jr., a pioneer in the field of computer science and a tremendous colleague and friend to so many. Dr. Brooks passed away on November 17, 2022 at the age of 91, surrounded by his family.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity is pleased to announce the availability of postdoctoral research appointments for a period of two years. The purpose of the Program is to develop scholars from underrepresented groups for possible tenure track appointments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other research universities.
The fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year is the first in a new chapter for the UNC Department of Computer Science. William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor Samarjit Chakraborty was appointed department chair on July 1.
New faculty members Benjamin Berg, Sayeed Ghani, and Roni Sengupta bring experience in both research and teaching and contribute to the department’s mission of maintaining academic excellence in an inclusive environment.
Assistant Professor Colin Raffel has received a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Raffel’s five-year grant, worth more than $535,700, is titled “Collaborative, Communal, and Continual Model Training for Democratizing Machine Learning.” The research will seek to enable community-developed and continually-improved machine learning models.
William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor Samarjit Chakraborty was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for 2022. Chakraborty was recognized for contributions to system-level timing analysis of cyber-physical systems.
