Python Developer

The Center for Leadership, Simulation, and Gaming in the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy is looking for a talented Python developer to join our developer team. The selected candidate will develop a set of policy-oriented, computer-based simulation models and participatory simulations (serious, web-based, multi-player games) for integration into the Batten School undergraduate and graduate curricula and research.
Ideal candidate will have 5 years of experience as a developer. Strong python and backend development skills are required. Full stack experience is strongly preferred. Familiarity with Django is preferred but not required. The position requires working as member of a high-performance team of software developers to produce simulation models and games. The qualified candidate will be working in a university setting to develop research and educational simulations at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.
The selected candidate will formulate and define the system scope and objectives based on client needs. Devise or modify procedures to solve moderately complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, and form of desired results. Responsible for program design, coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.

Initial appointment is for one year with renewal depending on funding and program needs.

Job Description:

  • Familiarity with web front-end technologies, such as Angular JS, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery.
  • Experience with other JavaScript libraries such as ExtJS, Knockout, Bootstrap.

Data Scientist/Research Analyst

University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine

This position will be responsible for developing state-of-the-art algorithms and tools for the Penn Social Media Lab. Specifically, programming will range across a subset of text-mining, machine learning, natural language processing, and data visualizations. The Social Media Lab conducts research at the intersection of public health and social media and uses rigorous scientific approaches to study Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Google Trends, and other platforms to better understand the power of emerging technologies and communication channels in health. This project will specifically focus on Twitter analysis so experience with this API is a requirement. This position will work under the direction of the project leaders.


Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar technical field and at least 1 year of applicable experience including experience with Twitter API is required. Proven programming experience: Python, Java, C++, or very well skilled in Javascript, PHP, or jQuery preferred. Preferred experience in: Hadoop/MapReduce, advanced natural language processing, and machine learning, but not required. Candidates with experience in research data analysis and who possess strong statistical and programming skills are preferred. Experience with Twitter is required. Strong understanding of scientific method required. Strong writing skills required with experience in translating data analysis to text for peer-reviewed publications preferred. Ability to contribute to the generation of new research questions preferred. Able to work independently with little supervision with high quality output. Able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Able to supervise novice or student programmers.
